What is the Ghostface AI trend?

Updated October 13, 2026

The Ghostface AI trend turns an ordinary selfie into a grainy late-90s horror-movie photo: you are on the phone in your bedroom, and a masked figure in a black hooded robe is standing in the doorway behind you.

What the photos look like

Every Ghostface AI photo copies the same handful of ingredients from 1990s slasher films:

  • A late-90s teenage bedroom: fairy lights, posters, a lava lamp, a small CRT TV.
  • A corded landline phone, often a see-through one, with the curly cord wrapped around a finger.
  • A masked figure in a long black hooded robe, silent in the doorway or behind the couch, while you have not noticed.
  • A cheap film-camera look: on-camera flash, soft focus, heavy grain, faded colours and an orange date stamp in the corner.

The fun is the contrast. You look relaxed, dreamy or a little worried, and the figure is just there, watching.

Where the Ghostface AI trend came from

Know Your Meme traces the trend to an AI-generated photo posted on Instagram on September 25, 2025. Within days, people were recreating it with Google Gemini, whose image model is nicknamed Nano Banana, and sharing the prompts on TikTok and Instagram Reels. With Halloween weeks away, it spread fast. Most videos of the photos use a remix of "Deceptacon" by Le Tigre.

In 2026 it came back for spooky season, with new scenes (mirror selfies, couch and TV, hallways), couples and friends versions, and short videos where the figure moves.

Why it went viral

  • It is easy. One selfie and one prompt. No costume, no camera crew.
  • It is nostalgic. The flash-and-grain 90s look is already a huge aesthetic on TikTok.
  • It tells a tiny story. Your friends spot the figure before "you" do.
  • It is seasonal. It is a Halloween post that needs no costume.
