The Ghostface AI meme and its variants

Updated October 13, 2026

The Ghostface AI trend started as one photo format and turned into a meme with spin-offs. Here are the main variants, where they came from, and how to make your own.

The original format

Know Your Meme describes the trend as AI images of people in a Y2K-style bedroom with Ghostface, the masked killer from the Scream films, standing behind them. The earliest example it lists was posted on Instagram on September 25, 2025, and the trend spread on TikTok and Instagram Reels in the last days of that month, usually set to a remix of "Deceptacon" by Le Tigre.

The joke is always the same: you are relaxed and unaware, and the viewer sees the figure first. Every variant below keeps that rule.

The main variants

1. The doorway phone call

The classic. You lie on the bed with a corded phone, fairy lights behind you, and the figure stands silent in the doorway. If you only make one, make this one.

2. The popcorn thief

Instead of lurking, the figure does something ordinary. Know Your Meme cites a TikTok from September 28, 2025 where it steals the poster's popcorn. Movie nights, snacks and remote controls all work: the figure reaches in while "you" watch TV.

3. Mirror selfie

You take a flash selfie in the bathroom mirror and the figure is in the reflection behind you. It reads well on a phone screen because the mask is the brightest thing in the frame.

4. Couples and sleepovers

Two to four people on a bed or couch, nobody noticing. Our couples and friends guide covers how to keep every face.

5. Character swaps

Some people replaced the masked figure with other characters. Know Your Meme records a version with the Penitent One from the game Blasphemous. Image tools often refuse named characters, so describe the look in general terms instead.

6. The moving version

Short videos where you turn around and the figure tilts its head or waves. See the Ghostface AI video page for the clip and a free prompt.

How to make your own variant

1. Keep the base: late-90s room, flash photo, grain, date stamp, figure in a black hooded robe and plain white mask.
2. Change one thing: what the figure is doing (stealing snacks, holding the cord, sitting on the bed) or where you are (kitchen, car, dorm).
3. Keep "you" unaware. The moment you look at the figure, the joke is gone.
4. Make it: edit one of our free prompts in Gemini, or use the generator for the 4 classic scenes and add your own twist in the caption.

Caption ideas

• "pov: you answered the phone in 1998"
• "me telling my friends I'm fine"
• "when you said you'd be home alone this weekend"
• "my roommate when I open the snacks"

Post the photos as a carousel and save the hallway shot for last, so the figure feels closer every swipe. For the full story of the trend, read what the Ghostface AI trend is.
